Java Fern gets planted in the substrate and java moss is the one that should be tied to driftwood or something right?

It is really hard to find plants here and I just paid 5.00 a piece for two really little java ferns so I would like to make sure they are healthy and grow for me. I remember reading somewhere that one or both of them do better if they are not planted and though it makes sense that it would be the fern that would be planted and not the moss, I figured I had better ask.

Kind of a dumb question, but just want to be sure I am right in planting the fern.

Thanks,

Barb

If planted in the substrate, java fern's rhizome will rot.

I have never actually tied a java fern down. I always find a way to wedge it into the driftwood or between rocks. Eventually the roots will grow and cling to whatever and keep it there.

If you're really lucky, the roots will anchor to a few pieces of gravel and form a sort of natural plant weight. Then you can just plop it anywhere you want.

I used fishing line to create this:

I've also tied it to lava rocks and coconut shells.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I felt kind of stupid asking if it should be planted or not, but am really glad I asked. I hate to kill my 2 baby plants as they are kind of expensive and hard to get here.

I have some driftwood that is going into the tank and I think I will try to do something like you did Jaysn or I will try to wedge it onto the driftwood as echo suggested. It is going in a 5 gallon tank with some shrimp when I get them so I should be able to put the java moss and fern onto the driftwood I hope.

Thanks Again,

Barb
