Java moss, how to use?

check your LFS' for them. although somewhat "common", it will all depend on your locale and selection of plants the store has.

i hope mine will grow wild so i can cultivate and sell it to others for a discounted price :)

Dbray-

You're a tad too late...

threw some out last night!

Grew so much that it was overcoming the other plants...

if you do get java moss, be sure to qurantine it like other plants for a week or two. i was surprised to see at least a dozen tiny baby snails crawling on the sides, especially since i rinsed and washed the heck out of the moss.

I find that soaking the plants in about a teaspoon of ALUM in a gallon of water for a day kills all snails almost immediately and the eggs within a day or so. ALUM is at your grocery store in the spice aisle.

There's an art to splitting coconut shells. I see island people hit it on a rock and it simply splits in half like magic!

I tried it, didn't work. Mum tried it, didn't work. So much for my part-islander ancestry. I had to use my jigsaw to make a coconut bikini for my gf - it was worth it ;)

But for aquarium use, be sure to boil the shell as much as you can until the water is no longer brown - you will have to replace the pot with fresh water as you go.

what about those reptile coconuts they sell at LFS. ive them varios sizes already cracked with a lil door. will these wrk as well?

actually i want to keep the baby snails. i've tried keeping the eggs sacs of my golden mystery snails in the 20G but after weeks and weeks of waiting, they never seem to hatch, so i was quite excited to see tiny snails crawling in the 5G (better that than my 10G!).

i might consider the reptile coconut shells. my java moss' are simply held down by a small rock in the 10G and it doesn't looks nice.
