hey now all,

Well, i dont know how stupid of a move this was or what, but my friend has a pair of jewels in his tank and they have babies nearly every month. The babies have been in there for a week or two, and he said they always get eaten, so he wanted to put some in my tank. MY three gallon eclipse has never been used!! I didnt even start cycling it yet. Sure death I am thinking, but he wanted to try it.
there are seven of them and they all disapeared as soon as they went into the tank. He told e they would hide in the pebbles.
Do I assume they are alive??

Man oh man...now I am worried that I ruined my new tank, but I am thinking at least this will be some type of ammonia if they dont make it? I mean these things are small!!!

please help and let me know if this is doomed or what I can do.

thanks!

take care,
Jared

Do not understand how this can ruin your tank?? The fry are probably dead, they do not hide in gravel. They do not swim well for a few days afte "hatching", and stay low.

hey now

hey,

Three out of the seven have made it through the weekend. I went friday and bought a patch of java moss. I read that fry eat the microscopic things off of the plants. They have been swimming all over and zipping around so I take it they are doing well? who knows. If they are still alive by midweek I am gonna toss some crushed freeze dried brin eshrimp in.

they actually do enjoy hiding in the pebbles. I think its a way for them to feel safe, natural instinct to take cover. Imagine them in a real lake and I bet that is exactly what they do when they feel threatened.

I am a newbie and I thought that seven dead fry in my tank would cause an ammonia spike. I think that may be pretty much impossible because they are so small.

I guess we will see what happens.

take care,
jared

Your tank will be fine. If they die, a little ammonia will be produced if they stay in there and rot. Enough to hurt any other fry in the tank?...I have no idea. They will appreciate the plant you added.

I don't know much about raising fry of anything, but when the guppy fry I get every now and then get big enough to swallow (or learn what it is???) they eat crushed shrimp pellets and small pieces of flake food. Before they do that, I don't know...they must find something in there.

If they make it, it should be pretty cool to watch them grow.

What are you planning to do with them?
