My breeding pair of jewel cichlids were doing great, the fry have hatched and are about a week old now. Both parents were really great! Now one of them is acting strange, is looking paler than usual and is hiding in a corner.. not taking its turn at watching the babies, and swimming away if the other adult gets too close. Any ideas? I would hate to think that I will lose her/him. How DO you sex these fish anyway?

sexing what i assume are Hemichromis species can be difficult, depending on which species you have .. and you haven't said.

after a spawning, it's not unusual for the female to retreat to a hiding place to 'rest up' so to speak. the process of carrying eggs and subsequently tending them can cause stress from which a recovery time is often needed. i'd give it another week at least before i'd worry ... and i'd certainly provide her (i'm guessing) with a way to escape the other fish's attentions. perhaps a tank divider.

Thanks for your response... I actually got some help in the chat room which more or less was the same as you said. I gave her some hi protein food too and she is looking a lot better even after a few hours.
I thought that the species i have is called "jewel cichlid" I don"t know its real name.....
