one of my jewels faces turns red and the other ones body turns a bright pink, so i know they must be spawnig, but all i see the red faced one do is chase the other one around, is that how they spawn? how long will they spawn before the female lays eggs? then how long before the eggs hatch?
thank you in advace,
shane

i wouldn't make the assumption that because of the color change you describe, spawning is going on. are you certain you have a pair? how do you know? color change in cichlids occurs for many reasons and spawning is one of them, but this is also a signature of mood changes, aggression and more.

what kind of "Jewel cichlids" are these?

the pet shop said they were red jewels, the pet shop also said i have a male and female, so how do they spawn when they do spawn?
thanks for repling to my post!!!!!!!!!

Many jewels will flush red when excited....my lifalili turn insanely red at feeding time.

there are about 9 species of "red" Jewel fishes. they spawn in different manner and we would have to know which species you have in order to answer your question. generally speaking, regardless of which species you have, you should have one male and several females in order to increase your chances of success. spawning jewel fishes are quite pugnacious and males may treat females pretty harshly ... having several females will dilute the spawning aggression and mitigate the potential shredding of a single female during the spawning process.

live2padl, thank u for replying, i do not know what type of red jewels i have, could u give me some pics of red jewels and i will tell u wich one my jewels look like, also i am not 100% sure i have 1 male 1 female, some say females have small divits on their forhead, some say the males coudal fin is pointy wheras the fmales is rounded, and i herd the males spots make a semicircle by thier dorsal fin, so i dont know for sure, i am trying to get a pic of a male with it fins flared so i can compare it to my fish, and a pic of a female with its fins flared so i can compare it also, so if u guys/gals can help with that, that would be great
thanks,
shane
