I just recently bought a pack of 12 Jiffy Peat Pellets made entirely of sphagnum peat moss just in case I decided in spawning a relatively-easy-to-breed tetras. Anyways, I decided to kill off all the snails in the 5G tank by pouring hot water in it, and removing the substrate. I have decided in breeding Black Phantom Tetras.

I did put two peat pellets in the filter. The only problem is that it expands and is too big for the filter cartridge compartment and causes the water to flow out of the filter via the intake tube instead of through the filter catridge (which is only filter floss, no carbon).

I was thinking about how a piece of driftwood is left in the tank to leach tannins in the water. Would I be able to put the peat pellets in a nylon stocking and let it sink by weighing it down with some rocks? Would this method still leach out the tannins in order to give the amber colour and still lower the pH of the water.

Before applying the peat pellets to the filter:
pH: 7.6, kH: 75 ppm, GH: 100 ppm
After adding two pellets in the filter and waiting 4 hours to test again:
pH: 7.4, kH: 60 ppm, GH: 80 ppm

Absolutely.
