Hi. I'm setting up a new 8 gallon tank and I was thinking about keeping Cambarellus Patzcuarensis crayfish. It's an open tank and I know from experience that crayfish like to escape. If I didn't fill up the tank all the way and left about an inch of air at the top do you think they'd be able to get out? Thanks!

If you have anything that they can climb on, lowering the water won't do you any good. For example, heaters, filters, decor, mounted thermometers, etc are often used by crayfish to claw and climb their way out of tanks. I keep mesh tops over my tanks, because even with lowered water, raised equipment, etc my crayfish will often tail-flick their way up to something and proceed to try and climb out of their tanks.

You may consider partially covering anything that sits on the tank walls (like filters) so that if they climb up they'll be stopped at the top.
