Saw a silver saum at the lfs today!!!! Only thing is the dip**** let him jump out of the damn container and hit the floor pretty hard and it was definatly hurt. If my girlfriend wouldn't have caught the act he probably would have still tryed to sale him to me it happened as he walked away and I was still gawking at the tank. So instead I ended up with a regular ol gold saum because I got saum fever after seeing the silver. I may go back in a week or so and see if its still there and trade the gold in for the silver, but as of now I have a new 1.5" gold saum in the grow out 55 with my 3.5-4" jack and 1.5 inch con. They are all being very peaceful:confused: I mean I expected at least some minor chasing, but they all three hang out especially at feeding time, but its ok. They aren't gonna have time to grow and beat on each other. This is a month at the most they will be together. My girlfriend is getting her place while I let my lease run out where im at and I am just gonna set my 150 up at her place and put the jack, oscar and pleco in there. then 1 55 will hold the saum and a pleco. the other 55 will hold.......nothing I guess. Maybe my con pair will get the 55 and I will use the 29 for something else. Though my 20 is going to be keyholes or rams. and 10 is going to be shellies. Hmmm I guess it could just be a quarantine. maybe I'll make the 20 quarantine and the 29 will be for a pair of rams and keyholes:) I bet im boring the hell out of you so good night :p

EDIT: oh yeah just for those who don't know....the saum is what is usually called the "green terror" when actually the real green terror really hasn't been around the hobby in quite some time. Its usually called Aequidens rivulatus but really that is false too. The fish we call a green terror today is actually just an acara of some sort that we call a saum and doesn't have a scientific name. Im probably confusing you so maybe someone else can word this better and will chime in lol.

Great fish. I prefer the gold saum myself and have a breeding pair. They have great personality.

they are called green terrors because they are green terrors. every fish store in america doesnt have green terror on the tank to try to fool u

Do you know for sure that optix is wrong? Or did you actually reserach and find out what the deal is, my guess is your a D*** and you just like to flame at optix because he likes cons. Get some proof and don't cause trouble....flaming at people who is telling us somthing, and calling them an idiot is not really relevant...why don't you just say if you think that there are GT's still around...

"Hey optix why do you think that they called them GT's in the store? Why would they try to fool us?"

insted of flaming them, give it a rest...nobody likes a hater whether you are right or wrong you went about it the wrong way...

But optix sounds good what you are going to do...keep us posted and maybe a few pic's ?!

This is what I have found(on the internet) among 50 or so comments

1) What is the scientific name?
Usually referred to as Aequidens Rivulatus. However, the fish you
see in stores is not the "true" aequidens rivulatus, so a more accurate
sci name would be aequidens sp. affn. rivulatus

2) Does he live up to his name? What’s his personality like?
To an extent, as I mentioned above. However the true aequidens rivulatus is the fish that really lives up to the name, and you never see those in the hobby. The hobby green terror is a fine addition to a community ofmoderately aggressive cichlids.

Green Terrors are from South America. There are 3 kinds of fish sold as green terrors. The Aequidens Rivulatus is just one kind, and is not seen often at all. It is also more aggressive and not as pretty as the other kinds of green terrors (aequidens sp.). The two kinds most often seen as "green terror" are actually a gold saum or a red saum, also called "flametail".

I have yet to find them listed in any book. Usually the typical Aequidens sp. is listed after a picture. I have heard it being called: Gold Saum in Axelrod's Atlas, but the most widely used name is the Flametail. Named of course for their beautiful caudal fin. Their tail fin comes in arrays of colors. From white, yellow, orange, and even Red! The quality is judged usually by how dark and wide the orange edge of the fin gets. The white tailed flametail often confuses people of another fish, their closes cousin the Green Terror, Aequidens rivulatus. I have only seen the true Aequidens rivulatus once about Fifteen years ago. This fish is a completely different animal. Its shape is more like the Red Hump Eartheater, Geophagus steindachneri. Aequidens rivulatus are very aggressive fishes hence the name Green Terror. On the contrary the Flametail is not aggressive compared to most Cichlids of that size.

Most green terrors in the hobby do not live up to the common
name. Not to imply that they are pushovers ... but the original
aequidens rivulatus species is supposedly one mean as hell fish.
the hobby green terrors -- correctly refered to as aequidens sp. affin. rivulatus -- are a bit calmer, and there are actually a few species that were synonymized with "aequidens rivulatus" some time ago. These are the fish that get sold as "green terrors". in fact the true aequidens rivulatus has a different coloration -- green dots on a dark body rather than dark dots on a green body.

These are all quotes.

Exactly... I've also read that the true green terrors were also smaller than the gold/silver saums that are tagged with the name Green Terror nowadays. They were not as colorful and grew to about 6-8" long. Or at least that is the info I've seen.

Are you sure they had a silver saum? I was at the LFS where I bought my gold and they had one that looked like a silver, but there was a little bit of red/orange at the base of the filns/tail that I had to look closely at to see.

I would have just bought it anyways... here they are pretty cheap (under 10$ canadian).

And as for sexing, I don't think you will be able to tell unless you vent the fish..or wait for a couple of months to see how it grows. At first I was certain I have a female, but 3 weeks later (and about 1/2" of growth) I'm not so sure anymore. The dorsal and anal fins were decently rounded at first, but now seem to be squaring off and elongating. I'm also noticing a little bit of a forehead on the little bugger. I checked the tank at the LFS and pretty much every fish had the same rounded look to their fins...but at 1.5" they aren't very mature.

I guess only time will tell.
