Hey all.
Some of you already know all this but here's the deal:
*I'm driving a neon, my boyfriend drives an MR2, just for reference when I mention the name of the car as opposed to "my car" or "my boyfriends car".*
I moved to a new city to attend school for approximately 9 months. I moved into an apartment with my boyfriend in September 2005. There is only one parking stall for this suite, and so for the first couple of months I used visitor parking because there were no rules against it. My name is not in the paperwork so I'm considered a visitor. There are visitor passes that must be used from Midnight to 6:00a.m.; I always used a visitor pass.
We rent. This building has renters and owners. Our landlord only owns this suite that my boyfriend rents. Our landlord lives in a different city.
One night, the visitor pass was not put up in the neon; car almost got towed around 2am. No big deal because there was no visitor pass. Paid the towing company the 80 bucks to put the car back down and then put the pass up for the rest of the night.
I continued to park in visitor for approximately 3 months (on and off, not every day, but I did park there a lot). The monday before Christmas, we went grocery shopping in the other car, came home an hour later (at around 7:30p.m.) and the neon was gone.
It has an immobilizer so it was not stolen, we knew it got towed. We called the towing company, and they told us that they received a call to tow the vehicle; wouldn't give us a name of the person who called them to tow it. It would be $180 to get the car back. Then we contacted the Strata at this building and they informed us that the property manager had sent a letter to my landlord (who lives in another city) saying that the car was to be towed because it violated the strata agreement. We read the agreement OVER and OVER and found nothing about it. They told us they had changed a rule about visitor parking, and that you could only park there 3 nights maximum, in a row. My landlord contacted us the next day saying he just received the letter that the car was going to be towed. He never got ANY information about the new strata agreement. We needed the car and decided to pay the fee and get it back (let me remind you this is DAYS before Christmas). While this was happening, the MR2 had a horrible ignition problem and we had no money or tools to fix it right away. Needless to say, it wasn't the greatest Christmas holiday.
When we got the car back, it had so many problems, including suspension issues, transmission issues, and we couldnt (and still cant) get the key out of the ignition. It had some issues before, so we let it go.
Christmas break passed, and we were unable to reach the property manager. We both got very busy and pretty much let this one go, because it had already caused so much stress.
Ever since then, I started parking on the street. About 2 weeks ago, we were going to be taking the neon out that night, so I parked in visitor parking as soon as I got home from class, which was around 2:30p.m. I was waiting for my boyfriend to come home from work, when I hear my car alarm going off. The suite is on the ground floor, facing the parking lot, so I ran outside as fast as I could, didn't even put shoes on. I look and the neon is up in the air, on the towtruck. I'm sure my reaction was the same as most people's.
I yelled, "What are you doing?!" and they said they got a call to tow my vehicle. I asked, "Why???". They informed me that there was no visitor pass. Let me remind you that the visitor pass says directly on it that it is needed "12:00a.m. to 6:00a.m. ONLY". I told the driver this and he shrugged his shoulders. I asked, "Who called you THIS time?" and he replied, "We use a number system, I don't have a name for you."
I realized at this point that these men were just doing their job, so I told him, "I know it's not your fault. I'm frustrated because I have not parked here for two months, I park for an hour and a half, and you're towing me!" After that, I asked how much it would be to get my car back. The driver felt bad for me, he said he would not charge me, but I would have to pay $40 to the parkade services. I'm an unemployed student, and that was literally all the money I had, so I handed it to the parkade service guy and he said I should talk to the property manager. He also told me he does not work night shift any longer because of THIS apartment building. That comment made me very curious.
I paid the money, and moved the car back on the street. My boyfriend contacted the property manager who told him I am not allowed to park there, at all, PERIOD. Apparently he sent a letter stating this, but we never received it. This time it was only $40, and I was so frustrated with the whole thing that I didn't know what to do.
Days passed, I noticed the same vehicles parked in visitor parking for 3-4 nights and days in a row. I couldn't believe it. Why was I being targeted?
The road we live on is has no parking (I park on a side road). Cars park along it every night and every day. Approximately 3 cars (usually the same cars) are parked therer right infront of the no parking signs, sometimes even blocking the bus stop.
You'd think with me not parking in the visitor parking that this would be over -- its not.
The last time the neon was towed was 2 weeks ago. I had been parking on the street every day. On the road I park on people block fire hydrants, park where theres no parking, etc. We get a call from the police on Monday night stating that they have towed the neon off the road because they received a complaint that it was too close to the stop sign. I couldn't believe it. The other people parked illegally only 2 metres away, were left untouched. Infact, they're STILL parking there as I am typing this. I was especially shocked because sometimes people parked infront of where I was "too close to the stop sign". I looked today, and someone is parked exactly where I was towed from.
We're stuck in a one-year lease that is up on June 3rd. This whole situation is so frustrating that we contacted the landlord and asked what our penalties would be for dropping out of the lease. He told us that a couple before us dropped the lease because they had similar problems with parking. I told him I feel like someone is targeting me, and watching me wherever I park. He told us he would contact the property manager and find out what the problem is.
We still haven't heard from him, but in the meantime, I still have no car. It cost $130 to get the car back, as it was being driven home, there was something terribly wrong. My boyfriend took it back and they took a look underneath.
The towtruck driver had towed it incorrectly and actually bent part of the suspension. They offered to fix it for us and assured us it was a 30 minute fix. This was Tuesday.
We were called yesterday because they were having trouble removing a bolt. They called back 3 HOURS later and said they still couldn't get the bolt off. Now, I'm no car genious.. but could they have not tried bolt cutters and just replaced the bolt? There wasn't much I could do about it, they said they'd try again today. They still charged us for the tow, even with all that has happened.
I haven't heard anything yet about the car, I hope it is fixed... this is too much. Especially considering that the MR2 now needs a new clutch, and isn't really driveable. It's going to cost another $500 to get the clutch put in.
If you actually read all that, I really appreciate it. I am having such a hard time lately. My course is almost done, so that's stressful enough, and now AGAIN with the car problems.
I don't know what to do anymore
I feel like someone is almost.. harassing me and targeting me for everything I do wrong.
I wanted to call in about everyone else that was parking illegally, but I didn't want to put anyone through what I'm going through.. and it would really be a waste of my time if I did do it.
Anyways... thanks again.. I really do appreciate any comments.
