Hi.
I just started our new marine tank. It's a custom built acrylic tank of about 200 US gallons. After some supplier problems I finally got round to adding salt to the water last weekend. However the water is now quite cloudy. I'm not sure if the cloudiness is because of the salt being added or a bacteria bloom. I have an SG reading of about 1.21 at the moment. Water temp is 26.2 C (about 79 F). Is this SG and temp ok ? Is there anything I can do about the cloudy water ?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What else is in the tank? How long has it been set-up? What do you have for circulation? The temp is OK but I'd raise the salinity up to 1.024-1.025'ish

What type of substrate did you use? If you used Live Sand sometimes it takes a day or so to completely settle down. The temp is fine but I would go with the previous posters suggestion of a slightly higher SG.

bump up the sg and circulate like the others suggested. i was amazed what circulation did to clear up my tank and disolve the salt.

Thanks for the tips. The substrate is a mix of coral sand and gravel. No live rock. Fake corals etc. I have 2 maxi jet 1200 litre per hour power heads for circulation. I added more salt this morning and SG is now about 1.023. I'll let it circulate for another few hours then check the SG this evening. Once the SG is ok hopefully after a few days the tank will clear up. I've attached a couple of pics from before the water went in.

What filtration are you using on the tank mate?

As its not a reef, your water circulation per hour needs to be 10 x your tank volume...So, about 2000 gph water circulation..your maxijets are currently giving you about 590gph ( combined ) water turn over...so, you really do need to get the flow in the tank higher..

Agreed, the 1200 is the model number not the gph.

I have an Aqua Medic Blue Reef 1000 filter system. Here's a link to the spec http://www.aqua-medic.com/blue_reef_1000.shtml

I would presume this is giving me enough circulation. Sg is now between 1.023 and 1.024. I was going to leave it at that then wait a few days to see if the cloudiness goes away.
