My puffer is doing great but I was just wondering why his bell turns brown/black at times and then white at times? Anyone know why this might be?

Could be several things. 3 top reasons are: stress, moodiness, near death. Please post your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH & SG readings. What's your water change schedule like? What's he eating?

I'm new to the whole aquarium thing but after I used my test strip the nitrate is not exactly 0 but not exactly 20, nitrite is .5, total hardness is hard, total alkalinity is 80, and the ph is 7.8. We have had this aquarium with gsp for about 6 weeks and we do a 10% water change weekly. He eats frozen blood worms and Omega 1 flakes. We also occasionally put ghost shrimp in there and snails.

How was the tank cycled?

What's the ammonia testing at?

Ammonia & nitrites have to be kept at 0 at all times--very toxic! 10% isn't enough. Do daily 80% WC, (start with 25% 4x, the 1st day & 50% 2x, the 2nd day, then you can do 80% daily, till the toxins are gone) till they stay at 0, then your tank will be cycled. After that, you need to do 50% weekly. Dechlorinate with Prime. If you want to instantly cycle the tank, do the 1st day WC, then add Bio-Spira to the filter.

How big is the tank? Please read: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum...cus/an-introduction-to-green-spotted-puffers/
