A friend of mine wants to pick up one, but there are no females around the area (which I hear is a common situation). Would it be ok to keep a single male with other community fish - live bearers and cories?
Yes, it should be perfectly fine. Gouramis aren't so much aggressive as they are territorial towards other males. With guppies they may nip at the fins but then again, it depends on the fish. Gouramis are usually kept singly also - because of the territoriality (that is not to say that it can't be done; I had three male neon blues in a 10 with no problems and have two in atm. Gouramis have very individual personalities just like bettas
Females are something you usually have to order as they are not commonly sold in pet stores; they are considered "uglier" because they are plain silver.
I have a chocolate and honey in a 20 gallon. There is really no interaction bewteen the 2 so I doubt either would care if they were the only gourami. You should be plenty fine keeping them alone.
