Does anybody have any Kilifish? I've been looking at them on Aquabid. They are really beautiful fish, but I never hear anybody talking about them, and I've never seen any in my LFS's. Are they ok for a community tank with non aggresive fish?

I had a colony by themselves for quite a while. Never worked at breeding them, then moved them into another tank, and lost a bunch to jumping. Currently have one female left, in with a male betta, UDC, an eel, kuhli loaches, swordtails and a tetra. No problems--she stays at the top, and doesn't really spend time with others. If you purchase eggs, you you won't be able to hatch them in the community tank, but juveniles fish should be okay.

Yep, I got my killi eggs from a seller on Aquabid, as well as several different plants, and food cultures. I've been very happy with all my transactions--but it pays to spend some time reading the reviews before buying. I read the sellers, and that of anyone who had negative comments. Sometimes negative feedback from one person wouldn't be a big deal to you--just depends on the situation.

Well, I'm not ready for eggs yet, although I do have a tank I could put them in. I'm going to see how the pair I'm bidding on do in my community tank.
I've looked up info on the seller and theyr'e rated very good, so we'll see.
The auction I'm bidding on isn't over till Thursday.

i'v read that most kilifish only last for one season? is this true?

they look really cool and i wouldn't mind getting a few but i dont want them to all die on me after a season...

Well, there are organizations and web sites devoted strictly to killifish, and from skimming thru some of these places, I've come to the conclusion that most species live about two years. Some only live one season, but others have lived as long as 4 or 5 years.
There is about a million different species of killifish, and come in so many fantastic colors and patterns, that they almost look like salt water fish. From what I've read they are pretty easy to breed, so I guess if you really got into it, you could keep a well stocked tank, even if they are short lived.
I still find it curious that none of the lfs's have them.

I was wondering why I never saw them at an lfs. They are pretty colored fish and beautiful fins. I wonder why lfs's don't seem to carry them?

Only thing I can think of is that they are kind of pricey. Maybe they dont sell well to the average platy and plastic plant customers.

This is just a follow-up to this thread.
I got my two pair of killifish. The males are really stunning. Beautiful fish. Like guppies, the females are very plain.
I think I know why you dont see them for sale in the lfs's. It's because they are so small. My guys are only about one inch long. I dont think most people would want to pay a lot of money for a fish that you really have to work at to see them in a community tank.
When I look at these guys in my tank, with all the other fish, being so much bigger (even my cardinals are twice as big) it seems like they really dont belong there.
I think if you had maybe a ten gal, with a couple dozen of these gorgeous little fish, it would be much better. They really are a breed apart.
