Just bought a pari of killifish. My LFS listed them as Gardiner ones. The female is (of course) not as colorful. The male is beautiful. Anything about them I need to know? I've never had them before. They are in a heavily planted 20 gallon with
1 German blue ram
3 corys
3 cherry barbs
3 bamboo shrimp
8 cardinals

Rena 55 filter,
air current

ammonia and nitrites zero
nitrates - small trace - the plants handle it
ph around 6.8
temp 79

I read somewhere they are big jumpers. Is this true??

yea they are definitely jumpers so make sure any openings are covered as best you can.

Seems like they pretty much complete your stocking too.

Only thing i would note is that the pair i had were fine for the first month, and then they started to get aggressive with my GBRs . Just something to watch out for.

Interesting -- I was more worried that my GBR would go after them. I'v got the back closed up as much as I can - Here's hoping.

Oh and yea---that completes my stocking of this tank with the exception of some different plants perhaps.

I really have doubts on the possibility of keeping killies with those fish and shrimps. I don't know. Maybe I'm just paranoid but the previous killies I've kept plus the experience of one member here whose apistos and rams were lost to the killies kinda put me off from trying them in a community tank again. I do hope you have another tank for those before any disaster happens.

I have a newish gardneri pair too but I'm worried they won't fit in any community tank. They tried to eat shrimp almost half their size so I'd think the smaller fish might be in trouble. Let me know how corys etc do with them as they grow, for now mine are stuck in my 10g q.

I've got 2 trios and a pair in different tanks and like has been said already, they are jumpers. If you can't completely cover the openings, lower the water level an inch or so. floating plants seem to help too. Also, they are (at least mine) fairly shy eaters so be careful that the barbs don't over compete at feeding time.

Need Pics :D
