I am not experienced in keeping Knifefish, and I wanted to get a tube for it to hide in (it is just hiding behind a big shell, and rocks with holes in them right now) and I was wondering if they liked one color over the other (clear or black)

I would think the black. They like the dark. Clear will allow light in. Make sure it's something he can grow into. 
I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. Aren't they blind and sense by electronic vibrations in the water? They just like to feel secure in something, which is why clear or black tubing will work fine.
Get whatever looks good to you -- the knifefish likes the tubing primarily so it has an electrically "quiet" space, as Cpt. Hook noted.
Ah, I see. Are they a primarily nocturnal fish? Because whenever I turn off the lights, it always comes out and swims around. So that is my guess.

At my LFS they have a product called a "Knifefish House" its just a clear tube like on the end of a gravel vac. At quite a good mark up price too,

I'm really not sure exactly what it is... I thought I heard the person who gave it to me say something about it being African. It is black, though. I haven't seen different knifefish in a while, so I forget which is which, and what they look like
im thinking about getting one of those (black knife fish). the guy I can get him from has him for 15 bucks, but is only like 2 inches long, so im debating on it. I think it looks great
