Knock knock?

Once lights go out I occasionally hear this "tap, tap" as if someone is tapping a stone against my aquarium glass. Lightly, but loud enough to be heard. I can't figure out what it is...any ideas?

All I have in the tank is live rock and sand. There are some hitch hiker snails and one mithrax crab.
 
it sounds to me like you have a mantis shrimp. not really a good thing. they will kill livestock in your tank (fish and inverts alike), and if they get big enough they can even break your aquarium glass. they have club-like appendages that they use to smack things around, like break the shell of a hermit so they can eat it, for example. these guys can even hurt you pretty bad if they come at you and club you. i'd try to get it out if you could, but don't try and grab it with your hands, use somethng else.

Well ****. How can I find the sucker? It sounds like "chink, chink". Always two.
 
So now I hear chink chink everywhere. My heater turning on and off, the springs in my chair as I adjust my position, my joints as I adjust my position, random house noises....egads.
 
haha. thankfully, what is in that video is a peacock mantis shrimp, and they're usually not hitchhikers, so it's probably not what's in your tank. they get much larger than the usual mantis, and are much more powerful/dangerous. my lfs has one for sale that is about 9 inches long. it's beautifully colored, but i'd never have one...and it's 250 bucks! it would have to be kept in a tank by itself, because they kill everything. pretty viscious. if that video freaked you out, don't keep searching youtube for mantis shrimp vids...there are lots of them.
