Title about covers it. Kramer, who is a girl, laid an egg. She's a single female so there's no baby that's going to come of it. I expect between 1 and 7 more eggs. She's due for another tomorrow morning/late tonight....and you can tell another is soon on its way because her little birdy poo isn't so little anymore!

This is her first time laying an egg (she's a little over 3.5 years old) - and my first time supervising. I did some research yesterday morning and called the vet as well to make sure I was doing things right. He said I should leave the eggs in with her until 17 days past the laying of the last egg, so that her internal clock tells her they won't hatch anyway and so that she won't just keep laying eggs to replace any that could get removed. That corroborates my 'net research.

So, she's been in with her egg...she's a good faux mommy, she won't really leave the little thing. She prefers having the covers over her cage and sqwauks like a banchee when it gets opened for more than a few minutes.

I've gotten her a big brand new cuttle bone so that she can have all the calcium she wants, and later today I will probably feed her some hard boiled egg and powdered egg shell in her food.

The thing is, now I'm kind of wondering if I should move her egg to someplace more hospitable (I know providing a nesting space encourages egglaying, but it's already happening anyway). The reason I'm thinking that is her egg is in her food dish. It's one of those square, deep white jobbies that slide in through the front of the cage. There is not going to be much room in there if she lays 8 eggs. And it can't be comfortable, she has to sit funny so that her tail can go over the edge of the dish, and her head barely pokes out. I mean, I know she picked that spot because she thought it was good - and comfortable and safe - but I don't know. I don't want to mess anything up.

There's a lot of room on the cage floor for me to set something up, like a small box with a fuzzy bird buddy spread out over the bottom. My instinct says to leave the egg where it is, but I want her to be able to eat and move, too!

I know a few of you have dealt with this sort of thing before, any advice?

Okay, a fast update!:D I just went to give her some seeds, which she normally doesn't really ever get, and as I lifted her cover I hear her move and what to my wondering eyes did appear? But a new little eggy right out of her rear!

So, she's got two so far. She's a speedy little bugger!

WOW!! Congrats Leo!! You're in luck, you knew Kramer was a girl..... imagine my surprise when my handsome little Adolfo laid one

anyhoot. My girl laid hers on the bottom of the cage and I let her do that every so often as she did. I tried leaving the egg there, I took it away as she laid, and found she was best as you are planning, with having the egg for the entire hatch time. When it doesn't hatch, she will get the picture. Be careful that she doesn't get exhausted from her sitting though. She will need some time out of the cage. This will be so she can relieve herself. If left in the cage, she will do so as far as possible from the clutch.... and with her sitting on the egg for so long, her matter is usually in bigger blobs than a normal "poo", it will also smell.... don't fear though, it's only because she's holding it in longer. As you know, nutrients are very important and should be supplemented.
I wound up getting Adolfo a boyfriend from a friend. Her first one didn't work out... she hated him. Too much of a wuss I suppose, the next male I got from a breeder in town. He was a wild male, and she was nuts for him and him for her. I did get him tame but nothing near what she was. When I got him, and they got along, I wound up getting the breeder box and they were such good parents. Years went by and dozens of birds later, Adolfo contracted something nasty. I was scared to death... Never really knew if she was egg-bound or it was something else..... I was devastated as was her mate. After she died I couldn't do it anymore, wound up selling the male and books, the cage, the box, all to a veterinarian. She promised to take good care of him. I went about 10 years before I got a new one. Her name is Sunny and she's just a yearling. She's a lot lighter, quieter than adolfo and we don't have the same bond but nonetheless, I forgot how sweet these birds can be. I'm sorry I dont have much to offer as far as advice but I wanted t say good luck with yours Leo, in whatever you decide to do as far as the box and if you wind up providing her with a mate or not. It's a fun hobby, and they are great birds.....

I hope next time someone post a thread like this starts explaining they are talking about birds.

Just re-read the first post and think it's someone speaking about his wife or sister.

*** Hope this will not be offensive to anyone. Just found it funny. :cool2: :cool2:

Uh huh..
At first, I had to wonder a bit about what kind of creature it is. :D

Sorry, nursie, it's a cockatiel. I forget sometimes that not everyone has read my bird-related posts:) Of course, in the first paragraph I did mention bird poo, for those who questioned what kind of animal it was:p

The poops are definitely huge, Doll LOL. The thing is, I had read about what you said in reference to them not poo-ing near their eggs....I think Kramer missed that lesson in school. She's been going right next to them. I've been plucking them out with a pair of my long fish tweezers.

I'm sorry about your bird, too, Doll. But, I do remember you posting pics of Sunny (unless I'm losing it) and she was very pretty and I'm sure well taken care of:)

I'm a little surprised about that second egg. She laid it at 1:10-ish this afternoon...she laid her first one only yesterday morning.

I took her out for a bit after I found the second egg (mind you I had just checked her a little while before) and tried giving her carrot, banana, green leaf lettuce ends, hard boiled eggs and shells, and seeds. She was only interested in the seeds. Oh well.

As for knowing she was a girl...well that only came in time. When we saved her from our friends, they told us Kramer was a boy (hence the boy name they gave him). In time, I knew "his" face should be much more colored and the squaking should turn to pretty chirping. I then suspected 90% Kramer was Kramette. Now I know. Problem is, from that time of thinking it was a boy, I refer to the bird as "he"....the bird must have a complex. Sometimes it's a he, sometimes it's a she:D

Anyway, I've decided I won't move the eggs. She laid 'em there, she can keep 'em there. If they were fertile, I'd move them for their safety.

As for getting her a mate, I will someday. Probably when we get a house with a bird/animal room. Chris says no more as of now. Of course, the hampster and our mice have since died so there is room:D

hehehe, it's her first clutch, Leo.... she's still learning this. She's probably afraid of leaving the eggs.... could you imagine her excitement!! :D

hehehe, we were probably posting these simultaneously, Leo. I forgot that I had posted the picture of her though, the link is right above your post.

Adolfo would always space each egg between a day and a half thru 2 and a half days..... when Kramer gets the hang of it, you'll be able to set your watch to her schedule :D

isn't it adorable how grown-up she's trying to be :D

That's what makes the whole thing funny when you think the post is about a human being...
