Title about covers it. Kramer, who is a girl, laid an egg. She's a single female so there's no baby that's going to come of it. I expect between 1 and 7 more eggs. She's due for another tomorrow morning/late tonight....and you can tell another is soon on its way because her little birdy poo isn't so little anymore!
This is her first time laying an egg (she's a little over 3.5 years old) - and my first time supervising. I did some research yesterday morning and called the vet as well to make sure I was doing things right. He said I should leave the eggs in with her until 17 days past the laying of the last egg, so that her internal clock tells her they won't hatch anyway and so that she won't just keep laying eggs to replace any that could get removed. That corroborates my 'net research.
So, she's been in with her egg...she's a good faux mommy, she won't really leave the little thing. She prefers having the covers over her cage and sqwauks like a banchee when it gets opened for more than a few minutes.
I've gotten her a big brand new cuttle bone so that she can have all the calcium she wants, and later today I will probably feed her some hard boiled egg and powdered egg shell in her food.
The thing is, now I'm kind of wondering if I should move her egg to someplace more hospitable (I know providing a nesting space encourages egglaying, but it's already happening anyway). The reason I'm thinking that is her egg is in her food dish. It's one of those square, deep white jobbies that slide in through the front of the cage. There is not going to be much room in there if she lays 8 eggs. And it can't be comfortable, she has to sit funny so that her tail can go over the edge of the dish, and her head barely pokes out. I mean, I know she picked that spot because she thought it was good - and comfortable and safe - but I don't know. I don't want to mess anything up.
There's a lot of room on the cage floor for me to set something up, like a small box with a fuzzy bird buddy spread out over the bottom. My instinct says to leave the egg where it is, but I want her to be able to eat and move, too!
I know a few of you have dealt with this sort of thing before, any advice?
