I've never used that particular substrate however if you feel the substrate has sharp edges, I'd refrain from using it.
I use flourite.... with medium gravel over it. works well... any pieces that make there way to the top layer, have had all the sharp edges beaten off. If I could do it again (which I might soon) I would go with a layer of flourite under a layer of fine sand. Although, thinking about that, if the kuhlis go to deep, they might run into it... but really, as brittle as flourite is, I don't think there would be a problem... you could tumble it and re-wash it, if you are worried.
