Large driftwood.

I have a 3 foot+ long piece of driftwood I got at an old abandoned house. (It was inside the house, not outside).
Obviously too long to fit in my oven or boil. I ran some water over it in the tub and scrubbed it with a stiff brush until the water ran clear.
Put it in my tank and it floated.
I figured after a few days it would soak up enough water and sink.
Three days later it is still floating.
Will it eventually sink? :huh: There really isnt a good pace to tie anything onto it, so I'm not sure what to do with it now.
Since I didnt sterilize it, I hope it wont do anything to my fish, :sick: but so far it hasnt, and also its not discolored my water. Will it mold? or grow any icky stuff on it?
any suggestions on my new addition would be apprectiated.

Is there anyway you can sink is with your hands and then rest some rocks on top of it to hold it down. Also, if you dont use your bathtub often (as in you have somewhere else to shower or bathe, not that you dont bathe often, LOL!) :duh: I would try to sink it in there for a couple days with some rocks.

I don't know if there is anyway to know if it is going to grow any fungus or other icky stuff until it is water, either in a tub or the tank. Sorry.
 
Well I have three small kiddos, so soaking the tub route for several days is out. Thought of that already :)
I could put something on it in the tank though and after a few days it would stay be itself???
 
Try pouring boiling water over it a few times. That might help a little. Or if you could find something big enough build a fire.
 
Try several flat pieces of slate, drill holes in them,(masonry drill bit), run stainless steel screws up through the slate and into the wood. Push the slate down into substrate and cover. You may have to leave some rocks on top to help keep it down initially, even this way.
 
How about buying one of those big $10 rubbermaid containers - filling it with water and soaking it in there for a few weeks untill it sinks ?
 
I've got a nice piece that I found about 3 weeks ago that is still soaking in a rubbermaid bin. I expect my particular piece to take several more weeks at least before it is ready to sink on its own.

In the past, I have just floated wood in my tank until it decided it was time to sink.
 
I might try the runbbermaid idea.
Hadnt thought of that.

But, if I leave the wood in long enough, it WILL sink right?

It is 3 foot long, but only about 2 inches thick.
I'm afraid to screw anything to it, might split it since it is thin.
 
It will sink. I haven't had any piece not sink, although some have taken several weeks.

The large one I am working on now is very thick and heavy and could possibly take months, but it is about 6 inches in diameter.
