Hi everyone,

I am in need of your experience with indoor ponds. It is actually my first pond and I am hoping for some help from knowledgeable people.

Context is..
- Project is taking place in a petstore
- I want it to be much more in length than in width
- I want it to look more like a slow running river than a wide, square or rectangular pond
- It will be sitting on ceramic tiles
- Air ventilation is very good in the store so we are not afraid of mold growing anywhere
- Turtles will have their hot spot centered at the end of the river, heatlamp coming from the ceiling
- I will be using Hagen Pond Liner 60' x 15' or something like that
- I was planning to use Hagen Laguna Powerjet 2900 on it, in addition to their new large pond filters i can't find pictures of

My questions are..
- How would you recommend to hold it in place?
- Would I need bottom drains on it even if the pond/river is only about 3-4 feet wide averaging a maximum of 20 inches deep ?
- What do you think of the shape I am planning to make ?
- According to your experience, will it be really hard to make it ?
- I thought I would put smaller koi and goldfish on the first part (Part A) of the river and bigger koi, large goldfish and several adult aquatic turtles on the Part B of the river, does that sound like a good idea ?
- I have about a month at most to complete it, working about 20 hours a week on it. I hope I can make it.

I hope you can help me with that project... i'm puzzled.

Here is an idea of what I want to achieve...

*** and sorry for my bad english, it is probably sometimes hard for you to understand since it is not my first language.....

Thanks ; )

I think(correct me if im wrong)that koi need a bit deeper water, maby 3-4 feet.....other than that your plan looks fine ;)(so is your english)

Unfortunately I can't go with any deeper, or maybe 20 inches at most. The structure can only support a hundred pound per square foot. Other problem with being deep would be too hard to see the fishes for customers..... as far as look only.

I may only keep goldfishes and turtles then....

if anyone knows something that could be of some help to me, i'm open to anything !

thanks
Oli

if you like fancies you could try them,or if you can keep the temp ideal get a bunch or livebearers, the turtles might enjoy the treat once in a while.

Or you could do a very nice arowanna and ray pool. That would be an awsome site.

I like that idea. I could somehow divide the pond in two, having the first 24 feet for goldfishes and turtles, then the rest for arowanas and freshwater rays.

as for the rest of my questions, does anyone have any experience building indoor ponds of a shape other than rectangular ?

Turtles + Fish

Bye Bye fishies

dgh has a point, turltes and fish don't mix well, plenty of nipped fins for larger fish and smaller ones will make a nice occasional snack.

For display purposes small koi between 4 and 10 inches would be fine but the number of these should be kept to a minimum. It's much more eye catching to have a few fish than overstocking the water feature - which could cause health issues for the fish on display.
Depending on the flow rate, fancy goldfish do better in water with minimal movement - but shubunkins, wakins, pond comets would be ideal and also be better suited to being housed with koi... again the numbers should be kept low.

For a feature that size 5 to 7 koi and 7 to 10 goldfish would be nice.

I like the idea of rays or other species being used... but what is the main purpose for this water feature in the store? If it's for promotion of pond products for potential backyard pond hobbyists then goldfish and koi should be used.

Since the unit is indoors the depth is not going to be quite as important. Your biggest concern in keeping Koi in it would be the gallons of water, filtration, and number of fish. It would probably be best to go with the goldfish.
Also, please consider the surrounding area where this pond is going to be located. Since you are going to have falls you will have splashing water. You may not be able to see it traveling but it will be there. You will want to be careful about what is near the pond as this traveling spray can damage surroundings before you even realize it.
