hi everyone-
how can i keep larger rocks in the aquarium..(bigger than a 10 g)...with out breaking my aquarium bottom..how strong is the bottom of an aquarium>>>
thanks so much- :spam:

get a light defuser (egg crate) from home depot. It will be with the drop ceiling stuff, and it's a big sheet of a bunch of squares. Cut it to fit your tank, and put it under your substrate, this will help distribute the weight more evenly. The bottom of your tank is pretty strong, e.g. a 20 gallon tank has almost 200lbs of water alone in it, so if your glass can handle that it should haldle an extra 5-10 lbs ok.

You can also go find out how much space there is under your tank and go get a pice of wood cut out to fit underthere so your glass can rest on it.

This thread made me also wonder...since things get lighter underwater, dose that meant he rocks actualy is lighter under water agianst your glass, and heavyer in a empty tank?

Uh, I don't have anything under my tanks. My 36g bowfront has a 30# and a 15# rock in it, 45# of rock.

My one 75g has 70# of rock in it. Each one is about 30-35#. My second one has about 70# of rock, too. One is 40#.

There's someone here with over 100# of rock in his tank. I'm sure he'll chime in :)

What about live rock? Do reef tanks have anything under them? There's a lot of rock in some of those tanks. Far more than I have in mine.

Things don't get lighter under water. The water provides a boyant force that acts against gravity making it seem lighter. The actual amount of mass above the glass is the same and will have the same amount of stress due to the weight of the rock and water.
