well I added some laterite to my aqurium earlier today, I rinsed it twice litely, as I was told not to rinse it to well, and alot of oranish colour came out, its in my tank now and it is EXTREMELY foggy, Iam in the process of doing a 50% water change right now cause I can't see a thing and I want to get my plants planted tonite before I go to bed, I have read that it is normal for it to be cloud, but its been 8 hours or so and it doesn't appear to have changed at all, I even turned off my powerhead because I figured the water movment wasn't helping, I kept on my powerfilter though, anyways is this normal and is there anything else I can do to help clear it up, oh I also put fresh carbon in my filter. thanks guys

Well, I would say you are just going to have to do water changes every day until you get rid of the cloudiness. The carbon won't do much, but you might see your filters dirty. The cloudiness is all of the sediment from the laterite. Much of it is too fine for the filters to trap so water changes will help.

ok sweet thanks, I am doing a 50% water change as we speak, and i can tell its already clearing things up, once Iam done this water change can I do another one right away or should I wait X ammount of time before another water change?

If you dont have any fish in there i dont think it would matter, and from the sound of it, i dont think you do. Sometimes if you let the filters work they may help clear things up overnight.

The fog doesn't matter at al, I supposel. I changed my substrate and though I rinsed it for the better half of a day I still got a foggy cloud of woe when I filled my tank back up ...

My fish had no choice but to go back in there and they're all quite healthy and fine. Furthermore, when I woke up the next morning the water was as clear as day.

I really rinced it well, too. I'd stir it all up in the bucket.. let it overflow until it was clear, then scoop it up with my net and run it under the high pressure tap then put it in a seperate bucket... >.>

That **** geosystem substrate claims to be dust-free too.. Lol

It's high quality stuff, though =) I'm really happy with it.

ya i do have fish in there, 2 balas, 4 gouramis, 1 angel, a pleco, and 1 craw fish, they seem prefectly content there gills aren't moving unatrually or anything, and I fed them as usually everything seemed fine, the water cleared a little after my water chagned I did about a 30%, I guess tomorow morning I'll do another water change if it is not clear, but I planted my plants, added another 20lbs of gravel ontop of the laterite, and I planted all my plants properly and its already looking pretty good although still very "milky"

The cloudiness wont really hurt the fish. But too many big water changes in a short time period could. I have read people on here say wait a minimum of 12 hours between water changes. You could just do one a day until it clears up and keep an eye on the filter which will probably get dirty pretty fast from the debris.

holy crap, yes its almost been 24 hours since I initially put it in, and 12 hours since my water change it has cleared up a bit more, but still quite noticable I'll do another water change today, and yes my filter, biowheel, almost looks ruined...its just covered in an orangy coating, will this be hurting my benaficial bacteria or anything? I'll definatly change the filter once the water is cleared up a bit more but should I do anything about the biowheel?

I had a similar problem with Eco Complete. Supposely, you do not rinse. However, when pouring in the first 7 gallon, I missed and hit the substrate. You could see, but it was so cloudy, it just looked bad.. very bad. It did not clear up in 24 hours, so I did a water change. It helped a bit.. a lot really, but still foggy.. and got worse as I worked with it.

ya I just did my second water change only about 20% this time, and its definatly clearing up, but still very milky looking, although I can see all the way through the tank now, anyways I guess I will just keep doing daily water changes and hopefully it will clear up soon, as I want to focus my attention around the plants now and try to get them growing nicely
