I have an older Eheim 2228 Pro Canister. I bought his filter used on craigslist. The filter leaks badly around the seal with the canister and pump housing. Normally I would think its just a bad seal and replace the O ring.

I took the O ring out and inspected it. No tears, cracks or issues I can see. Its supple and fits in the slot on the pump housing.

This is the only place the filter is leaking. I replaced the Basket Bushings inside of the canister as they were cracked and worn out.

is there some trick to putting the head gasket on? The canister has 4 locking claps one on each corner. In my opinion when I lock them down they dont take much pressure and dont feel very tight.

I'm pretty frustrated with this issue because from my inspection the filter doesn't seem to be damaged or flawed yet leaks.

I'm not sure with this model how to properly install the O ring. One thing that is often overlooked is wetting the O ring with some type of lubricant. I use mineral oil but I think you can use Vaseline also.

Good luck.

I didn't wet the o-ring with anything. What worries me is i cant risk a leaky canister. If I'm at work that canister could siphon 100 gallons of water into my house. That would be a nightmare to say the least.

Would putting vaseline really make a difference? What happens if the vaseline drys out?

yeah, a lot of seals and O-rings might look great, but in fact be horribly damaged. Replace the rubber.

:iagree:i just bought a 2228 used and the seal was leaking, same thing as yours. the seal look great but i guess it wasnt thick enough
so i bought another seal and is been working fine every since

never forget to lube your rubber seals :)

Another thing that can happen with top lid clamping motor housings on well used canisters is that the arms that hold the lid down can become stretched to the point that the lid will lift enough especially if power is turned off then on again. I had to put shims on the canister (Fluval 404) where the lid arms grasp the canister top take up a 3/16" gap that would appear when pressure would push against the lid and lift it off its seal and cause a very slow drip. But it is true that an old O-ring can most certainly look fine but when compared to new O-ring and especially when compressed a new O-ring is fatter and dose not flatten or role under pressure, and lubing is also very important, silicone lubricant is the best but Vaseline works well also.
