I might be interested in starting a tank with JUST this species...I have a 2.5 gallon available with a heater and filter...I will add planting if i end up getting these fish.

I just have a couple of questions

Do they eat their fry when they breed?
And what would be a good amount to put in a 2.5 gallon without overcrowding..

Any extra tips/advice is appreciated! :)

okay..i guess there isn't anybody on that knows about the Heterandria Formosa..I'll be back on later, Please private message me if you have any advice about these fish! Or if you can answer my questions!

Thanx so much!

You'll do best without a filter or underground one I think. I had a hang over the back, and it sucked them in! I covered it with a filter bag, and still had poblems with strong suction.

I had 25 in a 5 g, it wasn't crowded at all, though they were constantly going into the filter. They hide a lot, so you don't kow if you're missing 5 because they are hidden in plants or not. Trickster can give you a better idea of how many are good.

They don't eat their young. The female has one every couple of days. They are itty bitty. I did witness 2 fry. Just make sure you have lots of plants or hiding spaces for them.

I don't think you need a heater either.

Puppy,
I have kept about 15 in a 2.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter and they bred for me like crazy. I kept them with some Java Moss and baby tears. I feed them a mixed diet of Crushed flakes and newly hatched brine shrimp and when I can get them, Daphnia.
As for eating their fry? The way they are born, they are to large for the adults to eat, but other fish, thats another story. I would only keep just the hets in this tank. For detris control use snails or amano shrimp, stay away from ghost.
So a listing of plants I recommend are:
Anacharis
Hornwort
Baby's tears
Java Moss
I would tend though to stay with the more cool water plants, since they are native fish. You do not need to keep a heater for these guys since they are from Southern United States. Do regular water changes every week and these guys should do well for you.
As an FYI, I am currently working on an Article on these guys for AC. I should be done with it by the end of the Month.
