Anybody know any good LFS in Northern VA? Places I've been to have been mediocre at best.

Lancaster PA has That Fish Place, probably the best store I've ever been to. People from all over the country come to shop there. You cant get much better. I cant think of anything closer to northern VA, but its worth the drive.

SuperPetz in Annandale, there's a thread on this store in the General Chit Chat forum

Vienna Aquarium and Pets in Vienna

Fox Mill Pets in Herndon, two stores, one on Elden Street and one on Franklin Farm. The staff in both stores is above par. The Elden Street store has the best fish selection of the two stores, and the most healthiest in the area, but compared to Vienna and SuperPetz, they don't have a lot of fish

thanks roan... just came back from SuperPetz and Wally's in Annandale. Staff seems to be friendly but not as informative. Prices on filters and other accessories were 20 to 30% above what I found at Big Al's.

I'll check out Fox Mill since I work on Elden st.

**** right, their prices are 20 to 30% oe even more above the prices BIg Al's offer and that's with shipping. You know why?

....me neither but I would like to know

I usually only buy livestock from specialty fish stores, as they usually have a substantial markup as compared to large chain stores, but more variety and better quality livestock.

Large Chains can wrangle special deals with suppliers, dealers, and manufacturers that gives them better prices on hardware, but usually their livestock is nowhere near the quality of specialty stores.

I've been to Wally's and Superpetz. The staff at Wally's is nice, but their selection pales to Superpetz.

I buy my supplies and hardware from Petsmart. Print out their web price and they'll match it in store. Much cheaper this way!

I bought tank and all from Wally's...couldn't get anyone to help us in Annandale Superpets... very disappointing. Actually, there were two other people in Wally's buying stuff for the same reason...couldn't get any help at Superpets... Wally's was very helpful but I was really ticked after looking at the prices I "could" have gotten on some of my parts from Amazon.com. Would have been way less than Wally's!!

How about a good LFS in or around Williamsburg, VA and I don't mean the chains like Petsmart, land, or co?

yeah... its sometimes amazing how much they can mark up the prices. I'm also surprised there is no LFS that has gotten 'enlightened' about competition from online stores and somehow manage to feature competitive prices.

I bought three small bags of gravel from PetLand in Fairfax and it costed me over 16 dollars!! Went to walmart and found larger bags for under 4 dollars each... Customer service at SuperPetz is below average... I would only go there if I knew exactly what I needed to buy.
