Trying to get into the keeping of coral in a 55 gal tank. I currently have a lid on the top of the tank with a two bulb light light strip. Somewhat similar to your standard aquarium at your LFS. I want to remove that completely and get one of those lighting assemblies that you can clamp to the sides of the aquarium and it sits up about an inch over the water. Then there would be no hood or canopy above the tank. Anyone have any ideas on this, whether or not it could be done, is it a good idea?

I know that many of us, myself included, opt for no lid over their tank. without a lid more light penetrates the water and you dont have to worry about getting saltcreep all over it and cleaning the lid every few days. the only problem with not having a lid over your tank is the possbility of your little fishy friends committing suicide by jumping out. as long as you dont have any fish that are possible jumpers then i wouldnt be concerned.
Lol, lots of them are jumpers to! You can also get a hinged glass sheets at most lfs and have them cut to fit around your hood. That way you have the advantage/disadvantage

Well all I have in the tank is one Picasso Trigger, 1 Yellow Tang, three yellow tail damsels, and one domino damsel. I actually have had these fish since the beginning of July. All are doing fine. But thats my only problem is the freshwater lid. The salt creep is annoying. I even read somewhere that it said its a good idea to just push it in the tank, but I am not too thrilled about doing that. Dont like the idea of my fish munching on a big chunk of salt. So are those fish okay, or is it that all fish are possible jumpers?
I think that those fish should be fine. I'm not sure about the trigger but ive never heard of them being jumpers. I have a yellow tang and he is definetly not a jumper, nor should the damsels be. HTH
