Thanks for everyone's best wishes and helpful posts re: my sick betta . I did my best, but my betta passed on last night.

It is very sad, even though I had him for only 5 days and he didnt eat one bit all this time. All I can say, is I won't be going to that Petsmart any more.

But here's my situation...

I moved from Milwaukee to Little Rock, AR and was just starting to get back in to FW aquariums. (I have a 55g finished with cycling which I hv had with me for 3 years as a planted tank... just started planting this tank since the move. And the betta in a 2.5g was my first betta) In Mke, there were some nice LFS which I prefer any day over a Petsmart/Petco/Walmart, but here in LR there is not a single LFS that stocks FW fish. The only 2 LFSs for miles around here in Little Rock are into Marine species. That is why I had to take my chances with Petsmart. But now I dont know if I have any options.

I have read on these posts about some folks buying online. But I will heartbroken if even one comes DOA. Not to say they are expensive like hell, to get one betta some sites suggested me spending $85...scary.

I would not mind getting into marine FOWLR (due to access to a good LFS source) but I hear thats expensive too... as in a 55g setup could cost upto $800-1000 to get it right ....

What do you guys think my FW options are?

Just wanted to pass along condolences on your betta. I know any pet finds a place in our hearts quickly, but I just lost a betta also & can sympathize. Hope your fishkeeping turns out well with the saltwater, if you go that route! :)

www.****************

Bettas range from 3.50 to 5.00, shipping $25.00, total about $30

They do not charge more for extra fish and do not have a min order qty.

I've ordered from them before and have had no problems.

While $30 seems pricey, it's better than $85. If you combine it with stock for your 55g, it might work out well.

Another way is to purchase a package or two of Bio Spira from www.AquariumPlants.com

Once it arrives, refridgerate it and order ALL your fish for your 55g. When they get there, throw in the Bio Spira and the fish all at once. Based on my experience (13 tanks), you will have a 80% chance of a 24 hour cycle, 15% chance of cycling in 3-7 days, and 5% chance of full cycle in two weeks.

FWIW I buy all my fish online now. They are of better quality and far more healthy than any fish I have purchased in an LFS, except for my Boesemani.

Hope that helps

lol roan what bettas you looking at. bettas rabge from 2 dollar veil tails to 100+ dollar half moons

i sugest checking out aquabid and look through the american sellers, anything else will have even more shipping fees.

theres some really good betta specific forums like ultimatebettas.com and some others i forget cause im not exstremely into bettas i just got a couple

oh crap forgot if you find breeders on forums shipping can be as low as 5 bucks in the south where its been 70-80- degrees most of the winter. heatpacks cost less than overnight shipping too

Thanks, notgumbel, roan art and jadefoodog for your kind words and advice.

had a q about aquabid.com. All US sellers also say the betta are from Thailand or so. Wont the fish be quite traumatized with that travel?

Does anyone with experience on aquabid weigh in here?

Appreciate your help
