I currently have 2 150watt HQI metal halides for my 90 gallon tank. My lights are about 12" off of the open tank. I need a new lighting system and am contemplating getting 2 250 watt bulbs this time vs. the 150s. So my question is does anyone have any experience in how much more that could heat my tank up? I didn't know if it was a ridiculous amount or if turning on my other fan would be all I need.

I know this is a tough question to answer due to layout etc.

Thanks!

I can tell you that I have (2) 250 watts on my 55g long. I have 2 80mm computer fans wired and on the timer to come on when the MHs come on. I do have a canopy that is open on the top and back, the only times heat has been a worrisome issue was a week of insanely hot weather this past August. I floated a few ice bags and made it through without a chiller.

My 90 gallon has 2x250 watt mh on it with an open top canopy, and the only time I have problems is in the hot summer mths and even then the house has AC now so not to much of a problem. All depends as well with your tank, mine is a room divider between living and dining room so it has exposure on all sides for the cooler room temperature to keep it reasonable as opposed to an inwall installation where there is not as much ambient air revolving around the tank...
