I currently have 2 25W lights in the cover of my 10G tank. To help the lighting process i have considered removing the little plasitc screens that partially block the light coming from the lights. I was wondering if these little covers are essential for the health of my plants, or more importantly my plants, or if i would be fine without them on there at all. If i were to take them off would it actually help my plants receive more light because less would be blocked, primarily none at all.

are these incandescent (normal) bulbs you are talking about?

i had a ten gallon set up for a while that used incandescent bulbs... i eventually removed the plastic guards. the only effect i noticed was that it heated the tankwater a little more, and maybe decreased bulb life a little, but it was worth it for the extra light.

50 watts of light is about the right amount of light (even for a 10 gallon tank)... disregard wpg since it breaks down in small tanks. Just fertilize and if you can (add CO2).

have you ever considered the screw-in compact flourescent lights? I have two 20w screw-in cf on my 10 gal and its more than enough for my heavily planted tank. I also have CO2 DIY and i have problems with things growing out of the top of the tank...it looks great...I would consider the CF if you really wanted a nice plant tank

screw in bulbs - recommended plants

I'm resetting up my little 10g. It has 2 new 20W Corralife plant screw in compact fluorescents. I'm trying to decide on a plant assortment that will thrive without CO2. The water is fairly hard and I've got a 100% fluorite substrate

Would this list work:

From: http://store.yahoo.com/aquaticplantdepot/10gallonkit.html
1 Java Fern
2 Cryptocoryne Wendtii (Red)
1 Echinodorus Bleheri Small ( Amazon)
3 Ludwigia repens
1 Anubias Barteri
4 Echinodorus Tenellus
1/8 lb Java Moss
1 Portion Lilaeopsis
2 Marble Snails

or should I go with the low light assortment:
http://store.yahoo.com/aquaticplantdepot/lowliplta.html

2 Anubias Barteri Reg
2 Anubias Nana Reg
2 Java Fern
2 Bolbitis Heudelotii
2 Cryptocoryne Blassi
1 Anubias Show
2 Marble Snails

Hi Jim,

As a general rule, your better off starting your own thread for a new question.

I think I'd go with the low light package and add a stem plant or two. 5 swords would overwhelm a 10g pretty quickly.

Hygro difformis (wisteria) is a nice nutrient sponge that'll be fine in a moderate light environment. The rest of the package is slow growth so you'll want some sort of stem to soak up excess nutrients. Anything that tends to be redder also tends to want more light: I don't think the L. repens would give you good color at that level.

You'll get more and better responses in a fresh thread…
