Or this actually might be too much light, someone should try this out.

Anyone heard of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights? They're all the rage with computer modding, they light up computers very well and use very little electricity. You can get them very cheap from here:

$6.50 for 2 12" tubes, this is so insanely cheap compared to what they used to cost. I have ordered from this place before, they won't rip you off. $6 doesn't seem like much light, but trust me it's enough for a night light if not too much. If both tubes are too much, you can remove one, they're not hard-wired together.

They run off of 12V, so you'll need to wire them up with a wall brick. The only tricky part here is the inverter that the cold cathodes need. Not many watts, but it steps up to lots of voltage. I think over 500V. So I imagine it will fry your fish and maybe you if it ever falls into the water. It also gets a little warm, so sealing it up is not a great idea.

Someone needs to give this a try and tell us how it goes. I would do it myself, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can get a bigger tank and hood soon, so I don't want to go through the trouble of putting them in this light strip.
