Hello,

Been fishkeeping for about 8 months, my girlfriend and i been talkin about getting a bigger tank in the future. Few days ago however we found a awsome deal on a HUGE tank, and we bought it. A 240g tank for $900 bucks.:woot: I'm pretty intrested in starting a heavy planted tank. The lighting that came with this tank are two fixures both containing 2 blubs. The blubs read "6700K F28-T5-BP", "Colormax F28-T5-BP" (44 inchs long) How much watts are these? and lumes? I know the WPG rule for planted tanks is normal 2-3 wpg, is a good amount.

Atm im running a 50g, with maybe 8 plants, some are doing ok others not to well. my 50g doesnt have great lighting.

With my new tank, (even tho im broke now) i want to go all out. I planning on gettin inriched substrate (eco-complete) (crazy exspensive at $30 a 20lb bag). Also planning to get CO2 injection running, and of course ferts. It's going to be a long process for me seeing as it's going to cost more then i got to spent right now, (maybe a few months b4 i get everything ready to start)

So back to teh question, how many wattslume do my blubs have? because if they arnt enough im going to have to dump more money into this project. :headshake2::mad2:

from my guess, i found a t5 actinic bulb on aquaruimguys.com and that is 45.5 inches long, and rated at 54 watts. so yours are probably something around there. the 6700k rating are great bulbs for plants.

what about pressurzed co2? in a tank that huge, with 3 wpg, that is a MUST

first, you dont have to get eco complete to grow plants well. you'll be just fine with some pool filter or play sand, and both are MUCH cheaper and come in larger bags. we're talking about 50-60 lbs for $10.

as for lighting, you're going to need at least 480 watts for 2 wpg, so you'd be better off getting a CFL fixture. T-5's can work well though, but can be expensive

54 watt pre bulb eh, so 216 watts >.>? pretty weak.
Yep pressurized CO2, for sure.

CFL fixture, happen to have any links? im still pretty new to the vast amount of hardware.

been lookin around, i noticed u can get some pretty powerfull lighting that requires a ballast. 120-240vol. im in a basement suite, there are a few outlits in the kitchen that you cannot use more then 2 appilances at once or it pops a breaker. I dunno if i could run one of these.

Yes, adding another fixture will increase the total wattage. Where abouts in BC are you? In the lower mainland we have great water for South American fish.
