I was looking at some aquarium equipment and i came across a "moon light". My main reason for using it would be to see my nocturnal fish b/c as soon as i turn the light on in the room at night, the fish darts back into hiding. Anyone who uses this light, i was wondering how it makes the tank look but also whether it is worth buying.

I've never used one but I've seen the efect. Mostly, there are some composed of red leds, that give an awesome dim ligth to watch the fish in the dark. I think this is great for a rocky enviroment with fast moving chiclids.

There's also the blue led strips, that will give the look of a full moon light, specially if your tank has tall plants that will cast shadows over the susbtrate, and you have slow moving fishes. Imagine a heavily planted discus tank in a low dimmed blue light. Awesome.

Red looks like a lot of energy, and blue is calming, to my personal choice.

I never considered one of those since I have my tank in a room with a dimmer wall switch, so I can leave a low light to watch the fishes without bothering them, but now I want one.

I have blue led's on my tank and it is a cool effect and you can watch the fish at night.

I did a cheap diy moonlight by slipping a "light sensative" nightlight under the hood. It would come on automatically when I shut the main light off. It worked pretty good. Not the cool blue light, but still allowed me to watch night time behavior.

I too was curious about adding a night light. Here is one that I am contemplating:

Lunar lights

Anyone have experience with these? I'm leaning towards the blue one, but the white moon one sounds more natural.

So much fish activity is nocturnal. I think we are really shortchanging ourselves by not having a night light. If you have a 9 to 5 job, you don't even get to see the fish for most of the day when the lights are on.
