Hello,

I have a 125 FOWLR tank that has been up an running for about 8 months. I am slowly turning it into a reef tank and I have a question about lighting. I would like to keep mainly soft corals, possible anemone, possible clam (I know they require more lighting).

I have researched a couple of sites and I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between lighting sources (ie. MH, power compacts, etc). Also, what would your opinions be on which would be best for my tank (most effecient and effective) at the lowest cost, as always.

Even a website suggestion would work. I just don't really know the difference in what I am reading about. Thanks.

Different light types have different outputs--the color spectrum, intensity, and depth penetration are all important factors. The higher output lights, like MH and PC, provide better light for photosynthetic critters. The specific bulbs selected will determine the spectrum of light.

In general, MH provide the best options--and usually cost the most. PC rank second, and VHO fall somewhere down at the bottom. PC are a cost effective solution for the most corals.

Somewhere is a link to a really good explanation on lighting...I have the printout, but not the link. Sigh--you may want to check around. I know it's in the Marine section someplace...

Thanks for your reply. I'll check around for the thread. I've also been looking on ReefCentral. But, some of the conversations have become too technical for us non reefers.
