Live bloodworms?

Ok, I've heard from a few places that feeding LIVE bloodworms is a bad idea. Can anyone tell me WHY? My LFS sells something called "Blackworms" which I've been told are the same things ... true? Just trying to clear up some confusion in my mind ... my fish LOVE these things!

any kind of live food has the possibility of carrying parasites to your fish.

Bloodworms and blackworms are two different things. Bloodworms are actually mesquitoe larvae and blackworms are...well, blackworms ! ;)

I feed blackworms to my fish on occasion. They are pretty easy to keep....just put them in a covered bowl in the fridge..(if you can stand the thought of such things sharing space with your leftovers)..and do water changes every day on them...it's easy, I just pour out the old being careful not to dump the worms..then add new fresh.

Hope that answers if for ya ;)

Feeding live bloodworms is actually safer than feeding other kinds of live worms. Other worms you probably do not raise yourself and they have a chanc of spreading disease, especially tubifex. Blood worms you can get simply by leaving still water outside for a couple of nights. You will see small worms hanging on the water's surface. Those are blood worms. I feed tons of them to my fish during the summer.

Kissofthegorami Can I just ask something here related to the blood worms ... you say if you put some water outside for a few nights... I'd like to do this but how do we know when theyre ready to feed to our fish? also if you use this many worms how many water containers have you got outside ... thanks in Advance I think this would be great info for us all to hear ... Is there a link to a site or page of info on these subjects anyone?

Feed frozen foods, just as good and less chance of crap being carried over to your fish :)

Thanks Maj0rFiSh I guess the frozen food way is so much easier....

The best way to go for live foods is to culture your own. It's fairly easy, and cheaper in the long run than buying frozen foods. I don't like the idea of producing mosquito larvae though, we have enough as it is around here and with the threat of West Nile I'd rather use alternatives.

Do you keep it frozen or thaw it then feed the fish?

that depends on personal preferences on how you'd like it to be spread through the tank. Some people throw the cubes right in, some people soak them in tank water, rinse them, then releasing them..... me, I've done it both ways without any problems.

i just thought feeding them frozen food would be too cold and hurt them or something...i'll give it a try sometime.
