if i am getting a 50 gallon tank, about how much live rock should i use?

Depends on how you set up the tank, but 1.5 lbs per gallon is a good rule of thumb for many varieties of live rock. 2 lbs per gallon is usually better.

Adding to this question: Where is a good, low-price source for Pacific live rock? At LFS prices the 20 pounds that I'd need for my nano-reef would cost about $140!!! I just can't justify spending that kind of money on that little rock. What is a good online vendor that sells their Pacific live rock for less than $4/pound?

When I set up my 55 I started with base rock from hirocks.com. I ordered 30lbs and with shipping it came to $45. The only way I know what is the base rock in my tank now is because I know where I put it. After a few months the dead rock blends in very nicely with the lr.
