hey everyone ive just recieved my fiji premium live rock oh, i would say 2 weeks ago. Its been in my tank all this time. The coraline algea is starting to pop out, its only a light purple in most spots, some are bright purple though. But anyways, what i was wondering is, my rocks on the top of the pile are turning white? I've notice past few days some dots of coraline algea are growing over it. Is this just die off, and maybe from excessive lighting. 1st day started out with 3 hours and gradually worked my way up to 12 hours, 12 hours off. So what could this be, and do i need to worry about it? Oh, and my ammonia was sky high, and has now dropped, but now Nitrite is 8ppm sky high also. Maybe that has something to do with it? Ive had tanks cycle before but not as high as it is now. But the others didnt use live rock to cycle. Anyways let me know you smart people!

Thanks,
Jon

now the rocks are getting what i think is detritus or something on it. The rocks are turning a rust color brown on them? What is causing the whiting and browing of my rocks?

JMO, but with NO2 that high I'd do some back-to-back water changes to get it down. Might prolong the cycle a bit, but it will help preserve life and reduce algae blooms.
Sometimes coraline will bleach if it's out of the water for a while, or if there's a change in lighting from what it's used to. It'll come back, don't worry.

Ya im doing a water change tommorow (sunday), because i work at a pet store and thats where i get my RO water. It must be close to being done cyclying because isnt that when you get brown algea blooms? Ammonias .25, Nitrite is 8ppm, must be close to coming back down, ammonia was at 8ppm, but now its gone done and nitrite has gone up and been up for the past week and a half. Ive had the rock cycling my tank for 3 and a half weeks now. So time for water change anyways. The white rocks are the ones on the top of my stack. The ones closest to the light. So im assuming it does have something to do with the lighting. Ive also heard high calcium can turn your live rocks white? Anyone else heard this? Because i know my calcium is high, i just do the beginner dosage recommendations on all my supplements. Which is all seachem. Right now dosing reef advantage calcium twice a week, reef iodide every other day , and reef plus twice a week. Live rock must not be using up enough calcium for dosage twice a week. Becasue my caclium is up to like 600! So im prob going to cut dosage in half, see what that does

Also, i just blasted all my rock with turkey baster and luckly it blew off all the brown algea, well most. And i left the lights off for 24 hours, it seemed to help have some die off before blasted the rest off. The coraline algea is also increased some. My fiji rocks starting to actually look like fiji rock. Some bright purple spots are covering most of the rocks. Hopefully it gets done cycling sometime soon so can add some invertabrates and some corals yeppy!

I've got corraline all over rocks, glass, equipment and don't dose at all. It stays 350-450. But then again I don't use RO so maybe mine stays higher naturally.

Sounds like you're not done cycling. I don't think, someone correct me if I'm wrong, you wouldn't be able to blow algae off with a turkey baster, that sounds like it's shedding (waste) and it's normal.

You don't need to dose Ca at all right now if you're at 600ppm. Wait until that comes down before you add more. What's your alk at? I'd be a little concerned that with Ca that high alk may be low, which could result in low pH or pH swings. (Not sure what Reef Plus is, is that a buffer?) Also you don't need to dose iodide, there's nothing in the tank that needs it and unless you can test for it be careful; too much can be harmful.
