I don't own any but I am very curious. How do you know when a livebearer is pregnant? I heard of a fish showing movement in the belly area but it ended up being an intestinal blockage and the fish died. Also, how many fry can be born at a time?

Livebearers

Personally I love them. You can tell the females are pregnant when a dark "gravid" spot by their anal fin. Also, they will get very "fat" and round bellied with babies. Im not exactlt sure, but any where between 10 to 40 babies can be dropped.

I would search google or fish sites for more info.

I once watched my female swordtail give birth, she had a dark gravid spot. One morning I noticed babies at the water surface. She dropped about eight, turned around and ate about 4 with her boyfriend tagging along gobbling up stragglers. The whole birth must of took 15 minutes or so, and she dropped about 30 to 40 babies, I'd say. I have one female survivor in my tank now.

I have Least Killiefish, the smallest known livebearer and their bellies get big, and they have 1 baby every day or 2 for up to 20 fish (I think). that is what I read, but I have not spotted new born fry, though I think I have some new ones- all of the 20 fish I have are small in the first place so it is hard to tell.

When I was little I had sword tails, they were neat, 2 or 3 survived through adulthood. It was neat ot magically have more fish one day.

there is my 2 cents

after you start seeing the embryos eyes (gravid spot), how long before they give birth? I have a preggy platy im wondering about.

If you watch their behaviour you may notice that as she gets larger and larger, one day she'll start to try and isolate herself - she'll slow down a bit, maybe try to hide in some decor or plants, and during the night that day or the next she'll drop the fry.
Beeker - I think you're talking about my poor neon. Her belly was bloated looking, but I find that while livebearers look big, they're not bloated in the same way. Sort of like comparing a woman who's 9 months pregnant to someone overweight, it's not the same look. If your platy looks almost uncomfortably big, sometimes squarish from behind, the time is probably near :)

Thank you for the info. Neat thread.
Blinky,
I think it was your neon. Sorry to hear about that.
