Anyone else’s clown loaches sleep swim? A while after I turn the light off they hover vertically in the middle (height) of the tank out in the open. When I move closer to the tank they wake up and dart away.

My zebra loaches sometimes do that. As long as they look healthy i dont' think its anything but loaches being loaches 
Mine don't. I think that's not good for them. Do your loaches have a good place to sleep? They'd like to hide under some slate rocks or some tight fitting caves for their naps. They also like a soft substrate, like fine gravel or sand. They most certainly would sleep on their sides if you gave them the appropiate accomidations.
