It has been a while since I setup the multi tank and they are good parents to say the least. I have about 50 or so fry in the tank right now. 2 out of 3 males have a dominant and lesser female each. They have only bred with the more dominant females but boy have they bred. It is very hard to get pics of the fry so I don't have any right now. Does anyone know how the fry will integrate into the colony of 2 trios and one lone male as they continue to grow and increase in number? My tank is 33 gallons 48x12x12. It has 2 aquaclear 30 filters that are keeping up just fine right now. Any advice regarding filtration adding additional shells( I have 72 escargot shells right now) maybe smaller ones for juveniles?, if there is a need to remove any adult fish, what behavior to expect, or anything else you think may be helpful would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. It is pretty cool watching them with all the fry, I just hadn't expected one brood after the next. The older fry look after the younger ones and the parents are always watching out for trouble. They are very cool little fish. They are hardy too. They bred while I was on vacation and the house sitter fed them about 3 months worth of food in a week. That was a mess, but it didn't slow these little fish down.

I have seen a couple of times with Multi's that if you disrupt the colony that they had actually turned aggressive towards each other, so if you do not have to mess with them then i would avoid it.. Your call they may be perfectfully fine though..

I agree with Pitt. Just let the colony grow, you can have tons of them in that tank. As the colony grows, I would add more normal sized escargot shells in the tank.

Thanks. I'll just watch it grow. I was hoping I wouldn't have to mess with anything. I really like this tank. Breeding has started slowing down with the pair that has produced 30+ fry. I haven't changed anything but the male in this pair has started harassing his "favorite" female? He beat her up pretty bad last night. She has been trying to avoid him today and even spent some time behind a powerhead. She was able to eat when I fed them this morning, but he will not let her near her shell or the fry. Any ideas what is going on? He has been spending more time around his other female's shells lately. He is even helping to dig around and under them. Is it possible that she has laid eggs? Could he be acting this way to protect the less dominant female's fry from his "favorite" female? Until now each male has only produced fry with one female. Any thoughts or info you have would be appreciated. Pittbull/Efors: how many fry do you think this tank can support?

Should support quite a few of them and every now and then the male may turn against a subject in the confines at times they can be unpredictable.. Try re-arranging the shells and or adding more shells or throw a couple of new rocks in the tank should mix up the boundaries a bit..

Multis are a shell dwelling cichlid from Lake Tanganyika. They spawn in, and retreat to, shells. The most common in the trade, as far as I've seen, is the Neolamprologus Multifasciatus (quick Google search got me the spelling), which is likely the one OP has.
