Can a dwarf gourami in a community tank be happy if it's the only dwarf gourami in the community tank?
Would the gourami be happier if he had a friend instead of a school of tetras as tank companions?
I ask because I'm about to invest in a 10 gallon tank, and I want the happiest gourami possible, for this tank size.

I put two male dwarfs in my community tank and they bullied each other so bad I finally seperated them.

Dwarf Gouramis are like male bettas. They do fine on there own. Although when you go to the lfs you see them all together in the tank and none of them are fighting which I find strange. But when you get them home, they fight with other gouramis of the same sex.

Welbutrin for Gouramis and Bettas to stop the fighting...Who's with me? lol

I think the whole store idea is like Cichlids. If you cram enough into a tank they won't know who to single out and all fish are on the defensive and scared of the pack. The second you single out a few of them it's bad news. Thats why cichlid experts to you to overcrowd your tank to minimize singling out and picking on.
I had the same situation with my gourami. Had 2 in my 29 thought it would be fine, one almost died from the abuse. Gave the bully to a friend. Now the picked on one bullies my German Blue Ram to the point of my ram being in a QT tank for wounds recieved. If he pulls through I am moving the Gourami. I have had no luck with gourami being community at all. Maybe it's the fact that a ram is about his size and colorful he finds it threatening?

In a yen gallon tank I wouldn't put anything with a DG. They really need at least a 20 gallon tank to have the proper teritory. If they are in such cramped quarters with tankmates you can almost garantee that he will end up being the only one in that tank. Also they are very messy fish and will be the main contributer to the bio-load in your tank.
