So, here's my current plan for my tank, down the road.

50g
A pair of pearl gourami
4 Angels
a pair of BN
amanos
anubias, grasses, driftwood

Anybody see any issues with that? Never kept angels before, will they attack the plecos like some chiclids will?

I want to make sure this plan is good to go before I get set on it...

also, would these fish care if the substrate is gravel or sand?
 
On the pearl gouramis--get either 2 females, or 1 male, or 1 male and 2 females.

On the angels--they should be OK, unless they want to breed. I have 4 in my 100gal. and one pairs breeds about every once in a while. Never had any hatch either 2 females or infertile. Eggs are nice food for my other fish.
 
im not sure 100% but i think i was told once that you cant keep gouramis and angels in the same tank due to aggression issues or something like that.

Sometimes the male is ready to breed and the female is not. With 2 females the chances of having one ready is higher.
 
I would not keep 4 angels in a 50 gallon, especially with a pair or trio of pearl gouramis. Eventually, I think you will find yourself with paired-off angels and will have to find new homes for the other 2 due to aggression. Problem is, the remaining pair will become very territorial when spawning, and I don't think the pearls will have anywhere to go to get away from them. Tanker's setup, being twice as big as yours, is no problem I'm sure. However, I just think that the pearls are too passive to hold their own with a pair of angels in a 50 (they are the most passive species of gourami I have kept).

If you are set on keeping both species, I would suggest a pair/trio of pearls and a single angel. I don't think you would have aggression issues that way. A pair of BN plecos should pose no issue for you, and should be very interesting to watch. If you choose to skip the other angels, you could easily add a school of fuller-bodied tetras, like lemons, columbians, diamonds, etc. Sounds like this will be a great tank!!! :)

ETA: Your fish will be happy with either sand or gravel for substrate. Your plants shouldn't mind either.

my 55 has 2 breeding pairs of angels 2 bn's and 6 albino corydoras.

adding any other fish in mid-top level would be a bad idea.
as it is these angels get along pretty good for breeding pairs..but imagine the tank cut in half...they have established territories and I keep an eye on them as sometimes it can get down right UGLY
 
How long does it realistically take for angels to go from dime to full grown? (~6 in long and 10 in tall, right?)
 
ok, so I prolly don't want 4 angels in a 50. assuming my wife won't let me get the two 1000 gal tanks I want (despite not having anywhere to put them) that prolly means less angels... I've read that if I keep less than 4, they will have aggression problems between them, unless they happen to be a mated pair. Is there any way to tell when they are dime to nickel size if they will play nice? I was originally thinking of only having two, anyway.
