that's awesome

Handsome little guy!

I haven't kept this species, but he's probably similar in care requirements to other Ambystoma. Keep him cool (preferably 50-70 F) and moist, give him plenty of hiding spots and a substrate he can burrow in, and give him a variety of live prey (crickets, waxworms, mealworms, and earthworms are all fine). One or two would be OK in a 10 gallon, though a 20 gallon long would be better.

Please don't release him; once an animal has been in captivity it should never be returned to the wild. There is too much risk of spreading pathogens or parasites to the wild populations.

what city did you find him at? If you live in southern oregon then that is a southern long toed salamander, If you live in central oregon then it is an eastern long toed salamander. I had 3 of these when I was 11, they are pretty neat salamanders.

thanks guy for ur info i still have to think if i want to keep him he is now housed in a 10 gallon tank with moss and bark so well see how it goes and DAVIDFBT I live in Washington

That looks like an Eastern Long-toed Salamander

As for your tank, that sounds good, just try to keep the substrate damp, not wet (Don't use a heat lamp, regular incandescent is fine). I usually use sphagnum moss for terrestrial salamanders, but that's just me. You should also have a water bowl or dish so he could cool down if he wants to, and you will need a log, preferably falling apart so he could dig under it. You could put some (2-3) Pacific Treefrogs if you want to too.

If you could get a picture of his/her underside I could tell you if its a boy or a girl.:)

Hey sorry to disappoint but I did let the salamander go to this park that I take my dog to that has a little wetland and a lot of logs so it seems like a perfect habitat for him or her.
But thanks again for the info I would have love to keep it but I don’t want animal that doesn’t come out.
