We need some additions for our 72g - it's currently home to 1 pearl gourami, 3 silver dollars and a bunch of cory cats. We'd like a school that prefers life in the top 1/2 of the tank.

Any suggestions?

Kind of depends on your taste and budget. Golden Wonder killies would probably work. They grow to be around 4 inches, are bright yellow with red tipped fins, and will stay close to the water surface. They're very interesting fish, and at least in my area, are pretty easy to find and inexpensive.

If you like odd and/or cryptic, you might try an African butterfly fish or two. They will hug the water's surface. They've got giant mouths, but they are surface feeders and tend to leave other fish alone. Only issue with them is that if your tank isn't covered, they're prone to leaping to their death.

Hatchets of any kind will stay at the surface as will most of the halfbeak species. Most top-dwellers are great jumpers so a tight fitting hood is a must.

Harlequin rasboras prefer the top 1/2

so do dwarf neon rainbows, or any other rainbows, i think

i personally would do rainbows if u want a smaller school of bigger fish or a larger school of smaller fish
