When I look into a saltwater aquarium I see all kinds of just bigger than microscopic life. I have seen at my LFS that they have these bricks that are supposed to seed this tiny life. I would really like to have tons of microscopic and just bigger than microscopic life completing their life cycles in my freshwater tank. But I see none. Does anyone else have this craving? I want my tank to crawl with all kinds of life of all sizes. is there anything that I can do?

You could pretty much drop some food in a bucket of water and things like planaria and copepods will just pop up.

Microcrustaceans and other little bugs are easy to find (they're in just about any body of water) but hard to maintain in most aquaria; small fish just can't resist them.

iagree with vampie. just a bucket of water out side will start. plus if its what your after over feeding will increase the life in your tank, but could have repocutions on the other fish/life forms in the tank.

I would go and get some bugs from a pond but I don't want any insects that would then transform into something to fly around my apartment. I suppose I could set up a QT where I go an collect and see what happens. Might be a good use for this 1 gal I have. what do you think a sponge filter? Anyone ever heard of a setup like this?

Why not get a worm carpet? :Dhttp://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136228&highlight=live+black+worms+substrate

But really, anything that small would be eaten. I have a bowl with some riccia & cuba in it, and there are hundreds of daphnia in it.
