Guys,

Based on this thread http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52017
and after doing some reading, I need to get a protein skimmer. In fact, I can't wait to get one.

Here is my question. With the LR I have, am I able to cut the canister out of the equation? If not, should I keep the canister for Bio filtering or use another method?

Your advise is appreciated,

Brian

I think you will need more cured LR for Bio filtration if you are going to loose the canister. Most sources reconmend 2lb per gallon. But when you reach that you should be able to ditch the canister (providing that leaves you with enough water movement) the only other thing is that you will loose some ability for mechanical and chemical filtration.

Hmmm...

Gotcha.

I don't have room behind the tank and limited room underneath. Any input on in-tank protein skimmers?

Do a search for Coralife Super Skimmer. They can be used in tank or in sump. They aren't that expensive if you get them off of the internet. I have one and I love it. I didn't get mine off of the internet though. I got mine in a local pet store and paid $145 for it. It is rated for up to a 65g tank. You can find them online for around $85 - $90 and they do a GREAT job. Make sure if you do get one of these skimmers that you get the one with the Needle Wheel and not the other one. I think you would be more than happy with these skimmers.

Hope this helps,

Bradd

I'll throw another vote in for the Coralife Super Skimmer. I've heard some negative things about the Remora, namely the noise level. The CSS is quiet, just a small hiss from the air intake, it cleans like theres no tomorrow, and is HOB. It takes about 6" of room behind the tank.
