I've lost 3 corys...2 albino that I just found floating and one green. He looked like half of his face was pale...not sure if someone had nipped him? Anyway, so far in my tank I have lost the corys and my emerald tetras. All of my emeralds in fact. I had 3. All other fish seem fine. I did add salt to the tank almost 2 weeks ago and raised the temp as some of my black tetras (the variety with somewhat flowing fins?) had a little bit of ick going. That is fine now. Nitrite 0, nitrate very low, amonia 0. (54 gallon)

I'm afraid to get any more corys. I thought they were pretty tough fish, unless the LFS where I got the corys and the emeralds gave me sick or stressed fish. What am I doing wrong?

Cories usually do not like salt, that could have had something to do with it.

Thing is, I only put 1 tsp per 10 gallons...not enough. Do you think that was enough to do it? It is wierd, they didn't act stressed...it was like one minute they were ok and the next they were gone.

Lisa,

If you only added 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons and raised the temp to treat for ich, then the ich is still in your tank. 1 teaspoon per 10 will not kill it.

Most likely the cories and the tetras died from ich infestation and you still have ich in your tank.

Just because you can't see the spots does not mean that it is not there. Ich forms in the gills as well.

you might have just gotten a bad batch, but I agree with Roan that the ich is still in the tank. I would follow the salt/heat method to the letter for at least a couple of weeks, then wait a few more weeks and give the corys another shot. I've had bad luck with corys from a particular store I usually go to, so don't feel too bad, but I would treat for the ich ASAP :)

Ok, will do. If I put in more salt, will it hurt my tetras? My black tetras were the only ones that showed any signs of ich, extremely mild case...very few spots on their back fins, but I treated immediately. The emeralds developed some sort of fungus...they all died eventually, one by one. I got all of them from the same LFS...

Lisa :duh:

Putting in the appropriate amount of salt for the recommended treatment time shouldn't hurt anyone, what will hurt the fish is a lingering case of ich that is not properly cured. I would do that ASAP. The corys may be suffering from secondary infections from the ich, and/or a bad group of fish.
