So I've been trying to read up on different websites about plants that will still flourish in low light environments. Such as 1 - 1.5 w/g. I get so much conflicting information I'm afraid to take any of the websites word for it, in case it's a ploy to sell their plants. One site will say a certain plant can be in 1w/g while another one will say it needs at least 2.5w/g.

In your experiences, what are some plants that have definately worked for you in low light conditions?

I already know about Anubias and Java Ferns/Moss. I'm not too fond of anubias because they don't thicken up the way I would like them to, even in my bright tank. I'm especially looking for something of a foreground cover. Is there any short grass-like plant out there that does well in low light situations?

Please list some low light plants, even if they're not foreground, though I am especially interested in something for a ground cover that doesn't get too tall, or tall at all.

Thanks!
Fernando

I have anacharis, long stems with leaves opposite each other up the stem, quick growing, can float or be planted. Good background.

Wisteria are cool, grow pretty fast, and have large leaves.

Banana plants...don't think it is what you are looking for...stemy with lillypad-like leaves.

I used to have a ground cover sort of- well it would have been if I kept that tank going...I got two little clumps of stuff that looked like grass...pieces about 1-2 inches long. It was a random pet-co plant.

My light is 18,000k 2w/g, 18 inches long on a 36 in long tank (30g), with the plants located centrally under the light. I think it is more for marine set-ups, but it is what I am using.

A good low light ground cover is marsilea (crenata/quadrifolia/minuta), aquatic clovers. They are very slow growers but will do fine in low light. They're like a slow growing, darker version of glosso. Pretty hard to find though.

Many cryptocrynes are low light plants like the wendtii, beckettii, and willisii.

Vallisneria like the corkscrew and jungle vals will grow in low lights.

Anacharis was mentioned, great nutrient absorber for a low light setup. Hornwort is also another great nutrient sponge for low lights.

I wouldn't call water wisteria a low light plant. They're tough as nails and will survive in low light, but they don't look nearly as good unless you have stronger lights. The same with water sprite.

I have a 50g tank with 80 watts of lighting so I'm definatly in the low light catagory. I have growing in my tank java fern, crypt wendtii (red and green) and 4 compacta swords one of which has a shoot with 2 other plants on it. I've tried java moss also, but it just wouldn't take in my tank. I did have some anacharis in my tank also at one time.
