Disclaimer: The author of this rant does not believe wholeheartedly in what he just typed, but is having a bad week dealing with ignorant pseudo-hobbiests at his part time job at a LFS.
*gives mooman a BIG hug and hopes he has a better day tomorrow*

For what it's worth, mooman, I go to my LFS often just to say hi and talk to a couple of the guys there. We all love our fishes and they are great to talk to. They listen to me, and I listen to them.

Not all customers are evil either :)

I'd just be happy they took him back. At that point, you pretty much absolved yourself of any responsibility. Seems too late to work up any energy over it. I have a 12-inch oscar that I use to discipline any bully community fish.

Question... were the platies all males? If so, I'd expect them to harass each other.

You're right I guess. I just hate being misled (ha, welcome to the real world!). All my fish are males. I guess I hoped he'd be placed in the tank (after passing the decontamination process) with all the other platies that looked just like him, same color, size, etc. and be happy. I think he tormented the other platies because they were smaller and different colored. Ironically, I once returned a bad batch of ghost shrimp and was horrified to see the sales girl dump them in the tank with the healthy ones! You know, it comes down to this, it all depends on who's working there when you walk in that door, doesn't it?

does it really matter its just a little fish? and you gave it to them so it should be pretty much dead to you anyway.

I would never have returned him to that LFS had I known what they were really going to do. Sometimes people try to find good homes for their pets-- that doesn't mean that the pet is "dead to them." Nor was my platy "dead to me" or I would have not went out of my way to try and get him another home.
I didn't think it would work to donate him to a friend unless they had a school of platies like him.

Like I said below, it all depends on who is working when you walk in the door with your problems, doesn't it?

That's what you have to remember. There is no employee that is there all the time, so the next shift will have no idea what the "deal" is on one lone platy. At my lfs, we have a couple huge tanks in Q that just have a bunch of "donated" fish. Sometimes thier in there for a while before we're slow enough for the manager to say "sort out those fish onto the sale floor". They get regular water changes, and a variety of food back there. Most are in a healthier environement than what they came from.

My understanding of livebearers in general is that groups of males with no females don't really work. The males will constantly harass each other and of course the more aggressive ones might kill the weaker ones. ....just something to keep in mind when buying.

Thanks Mooman, I feel better knowing that. This LFS has a return policy, which is why I even called the Manager before bringing in my fish to begin with. Knowing he's probably being cared for helps. Every one of my fish have a place in my heart--they have all been selected with great care, unfortunately not enough knowledge I guess. But education is a lifelong process!

you could have asked the members here to see if they would take the fish for you if they are local or a short distance, then you would know that your fish would be happy and they might send you a picture every now and then and updates on it. Would have been a tad easier..

That's a great suggestion! I will remember that in the future, although I'm hoping I won't have to donate any fish again.
