Hey guys, I am new to the hobby and I have been in the process of checking out all of the privatly owned pet stores to see if they carry anything that the Largers stores dont, but I was very very dissapointed with both, but specifically one store.

Their freshwater tanks were not horrid, but they looked like they needed a good cleaning, but their Saltwater tanks were disgusting. I dont know much about salt water tanks, but these had huge buildups of brown algea and what looked like calcium or salt on the floor and walls of the aquaria. Though I was impressed that there were no dead fish, only some sort of dead crustacean in one of the saltwater tanks (couldn't tell what it was, must have been there a while because it was upside down and starting to get covered with that salt/calcium buildup.

Now I was not specifically looking for Betta, but I found where they kept them. They have an 'island' counter which items on all four sides of the island, and the bettas were kept in half filled BABY FOOD JARS!!! WTF!!!!???? If my fiance had not kept me settled I would have said something to them about keeping them in that condition. The Bettas colors looked awful, their fins looked rotten and they had barely any space to even sit there. These jars were not even FULL, they were half full, barely enough water to keep them covered!!!

I just dont know what I should do, if anything. Write them a polite letter maybe? If so what should I say? Is there any sort of Fish Police or anything (don't laugh)???

What do you guys think???

don't shop there..eventually no one will shop there and they will go out of biz.

Eh thats what I planned. But this place has been in business for quite a while... is there nothing else to do?

Well speak to the manager/write a letter of complaint about the current conditions their fish are in and explain ways for them to improve their tanks or you'll have everyone protest their store.

Baby food jars WOW thats a new one. Whats next 2 bettas per cup??

in the 2 lfs i go to they have a tank about 3ft long 8inches wide and about 10 high an under gravel filer in it and heater along with dividers so each fish has its own space. will get a pic for you guys soon. they look quite healthy and happy!

Politely let the management know why you won't be shopping there anymore.

very calmly ask them why they keep their bettas in baby food jars and tell them in a nice way that they are not doing the bettas any good by keeping them that way and that need to use bigger jars for them and what they are doing to them now is cruel and unfair treatment. Unfortunately some LFS owners don't know any better.

I am new to fishkeeping but I'm a former animal protection officer (in Canada). I would report them to your local humane society - it is inhumane to keep fish in those conditions - an inspection might be just the thing to shape up their act.
